The Promise, A Resting Reality Room of Her Own

Through cast glass and assemblage of mixed-media materials, Santa Fe artist Linda Mae Tratechaud transforms deeply personal experiences of caregiving, motherhood, and loss into a rich environment that invites reflection on the emotional realities behind ideals of domestic life.
Both fragile and resilient, Tratechaud’s glass and mixed-media sculptures weave together references to nursing, birth, play, fatigue, and personal loss. Filled with vibrant shades of pink, The Promise reveals the emotional and physical labor that often underlies the fantasy of domestic bliss. An empty chair, an exhausted stained-glass figure, worn “Cinderella” slippers, an uneaten slice of cake, and suspended household objects evoke comforts just out of reach, illuminating the invisible work, quiet resilience, sacrifice, and hidden costs that sustain family life. Rather than presenting domesticity as idyllic, The Promise acknowledges the physical and emotional labor that underlies everyday acts of care while honoring the tenderness and strength found within them.
The installation offers visitors a contemplative space in which themes of caregiving, identity, and endurance resonate across personal and collective experience. By revealing what is often overlooked, Tratechaud creates an environment that encourages empathy and recognizes caregiving as both profoundly human and deeply transformative.
